NOTICE: On March 18, 2020 Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, sent out a proclamation suspending Sections 41.0052(a) and (b) of the Texas Election Code and Section 49.103 of the Texas Water Code to the extent necessary to allow political subdivisions that would hold election on May 2, 2020, to move to the next uniform election date, occurring on November 3, 2020, without otherwise adjusting the term or office, and suspending Sections 31.093 and 42.0621(c) of the Texas Election Code.

The 2021 City General Election will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 to elect three (3) City Council Members.  The City of Wilmer is a general law city.

Filing for a place on the ballot is set by state statute and will run from Wednesday, January 13, 2021 through Friday, February 12, 2021. Find additional election-related dates and information at https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/index.shtml (posted in accordance with Tx. Legis. H.B. 305, effective September 1, 2019).

Qualifications to run for Mayor and City Council

Filing requirements are per state statute, available at https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/guide/local.shtml, and those of the Election Code: 

  1. Must be a citizen of the United States.
  2. Must be 18 years of age or older at the commencement of the term to be filled by the election;
  3. Must be a qualified, registered voter in the City of Wilmer;
  4. Mayor: Must be a resident of Texas for twelve (12) months and the City of Wilmer for at least twelve (12) months prior to the date of filing.
    Council: Must be a resident of Texas for twelve (12) months and the City of Wilmer for at least six (6) months prior to the date of filing.
  5. Must not be under an adjudication of mental incompetence;
  6. Must not have been convicted of a felony for which he/she has not been pardoned or had Civil rights restored by other official action.
Filing Period
An application for a place on the ballot can be obtained from the Office of the City Secretary and submitted to that office between January 13, 2021, and February 12, 2021. Polling locations will be posted to this webpage as soon as they are determined. Election information may also be found on the Dallas County election website.

Candidate Packet Availability

The City Secretary’s Office makes available a candidate’s packet to acquaint candidates with applicable requirements for the City’s election. The candidate’s packet is not required in order to prepare to run for municipal office and is provided as a tool to assist those interested in running for municipal office. Packets will be available for pick-up in the City Secretary’s Office starting Monday, January 4, 2021 at 8:00 a.m.
