Municipal Election - May 1, 2021

The 2021 City General Election will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2021 to elect three (3) City Council Members.  The City of Wilmer is a general law city.

An application for a place on the ballot may be obtained from the Office of the City Secretary and submitted to that office between Wednesday, January 13, 2021, through Friday, February 12, 2021.  For any additional election-related dates and information, please visit https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/index.shtml (posted in accordance with TX Legislative H.B. 305, effective September 1, 2019.)

Polling locations will be posted to this webpage as soon as they are determined.  Election information may also be found on the Dallas County Elections website.


Qualifications to Run for Mayor and City Council
Filing requirements are per state statute, available at https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/guide/local.shtml, and those of the Election Code: 
  1. Must be a citizen of the United States.
  2. Must be 18 years of age or older at the commencement of the term to be filled by the election;
  3. Must be a qualified, registered voter in the City of Wilmer;
  4. Mayor: Must be a resident of Texas for twelve (12) months and the City of Wilmer for at least twelve (12) months prior to the date of filing. 
    Council: Must be a resident of Texas for twelve (12) months and the City of Wilmer for at least six (6) months prior to the date of filing.
  5. Must not be under an adjudication of mental incompetence

Candidate Packet Availability

The Office of the City Secretary makes available a candidate’s packet to acquaint candidates with applicable requirements for the City’s election. The candidate’s packet is not required in order to prepare to run for municipal office and is provided as a tool to assist those interested in running for municipal office. Packets will be available for pick-up in the Office of the City Secretary starting Monday, January 4, 2021 at 8:00 a.m.

HB 305 – Internet Posting Requirements for Political Subdivisions
On September 1, 2019, House Bill 305 became effective.  This bill requires that a political subdivision with the authority to impose a tax, that maintained a publicly accessible Internet website at any time on or after January 1, 2019, be required to post on its website the following information:

  1. The political subdivision’s contact information, including a mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address;
  2. Each elected officer of the political subdivision;
  3. The date and location of the next election for officers of the political subdivision;
  4. The requirements and deadline for filing for candidacy of each elected office of the political subdivision which shall be continuously posted or at least one year before the election day for the office;
